Our Mission in Lebanon
Our trip to Lebanon was part of
our elective posting.
The elective posting
is a Year 4 Medical Programme requirement. This posting is only
undertaken by 4th year medical students who have
passed all their major postings in year 3 and year 4. It is a
6-week course and students are given the privilege to do
research or attach to any areas of interest (related to
medicine) in or outside Malaysia.
Institution of elective posting:
Haifa Hospital,
Burj Al Barajneh Refugee Camp,
Beirut,
Lebanon
Haifa Hospital, Burj Al Barajneh
Palestinian Refugee Camp as it’s officially known, was chosen as
the location for the posting in view of the recent war in Gaza.
What with their dreadful history, the recent war in
Gaza earlier this year, and the massive media coverage, the
plight of the Palestinians is quite well known to the general
public. As fellow human
beings, one cannot but to feel sad when hearing about their
hardship and sufferings, and as Muslims, we feel that it is our
obligation to respond to the plea for help of our fellow
brothers and sisters.
By living and working within the
camp, we aimed at offering direct humanitarian aid, and
witnessing and experiencing ourselves the true conditions of the
camp and not merely accepting what we see and hear from the
media.
Furthermore, one of the
International Islamic University Malaysia’s mission and vision
is for the students to become the leaders of the Muslim
community, thus, by undertaking our posting in the Palestinian
refugee camp we aimed at establishing a direct link between our
university and the Palestinians. We are hoping that future
batches of medical students will follow in our footsteps and
also undertake their elective posting in the refugee camps.
Objectives of the elective posting:
i. To
observe the living conditions of the Palestinian refugees in
Lebanon.
ii. To
experience living life as a Palestinian refugee and experience
the hardship
they undergoing.
iii.
To help in
any way that we can around the refugee camp, be it medically,
socially or in terms of religion.
iv.
To volunteer
at the hospital and clinic and help in doing medical procedures.
v.
To observe
and compare the differences in medical practice abroad and in
Malaysia.
vi.
To learn
which diseases are common in Lebanon and compare them to those
common in Malaysia.
vii.
To provide
feedback to Malaysians regarding what we learnt during the
postings. |
