On 27th
December 2008, the Israeli war machine started to pound Gaza with bombs; later
with missiles, and on Saturday night of 3rd/4th January
2009, IOF (Israeli Occupation Forces) began a ground assault and invasion. The
reason stated by IOF is to stop Hamas from launching Qassam rockets into
Israel.
A ceasefire
even for only 48 hours on humanitarian grounds, proposed by state leaders days
ago was turned down by Israel. Worldwide,
demonstrations are taking place against the Israeli onslaught. A Libyan proposal
for a ceasefire in the UN Security Council was vetoed by the USA. The news
agencies are in overdrive, while in Gaza hundreds of people are dying. This is
the situation today.
MSRI/Sponsorship of Palestinian Children is condemning this war against the
Palestinian people in Gaza. The real cause of the violence in Palestine is the
siege of Gaza and the occupation of West Bank by the Israeli military. The
occupation is choking any kind of normal public life, be it economic, political,
social or civil.
We stand with
the steadfast Palestinians in Gaza and West Bank whose lives have been miserable
under a brutal occupation that has lasted for 41 years now, whose
fertile lands and water resources have been taken by illegal Israeli settlers
and cut off by the construction of the Apartheid Wall. The people who have to
live under curfews, roadblocks and closures for days, weeks, and months, faces
further humiliation, degradation and violence at hundreds of checkpoints.
We fully
support the people of Gaza who now have to face this ultimate aggression - a
war. 50% of the 1.5 million Palestinian population of Gaza are children under
the age of 15 years. They are the ones who suffer most from malnutrition and
illness and have for many years because of food scarcity due to these
conditions. The breakdown of the health system started by the siege, is now
complete with this war.
We call on the
Malaysian public to donate generously to our emergency fund for humanitarian aid
for the beleaguered people of Gaza. MSRI is working in cooperation with
Palestinian NGOs to provide food and medical aid to Gaza. A donation of RM
160.00 only will cover the cost of a food provision basket containing the most
essential food supplies for a family to survive on for a month. While any
unspecified donation will go towards their medical aid.
