This year, for the first time, MSRI is launching a charity appeal named "Shoe box project (Donate a Happy Hari Raya to a refugee child)". The scope
of the project is to donate decorated shoe boxes containing small gifts to the refugee children to celebarate the Hari Raya on 30-31st Aug 2011. The boxes will be decorated by other children living in KL and will contain gifts donated by them to the refugee children.
The project is realized in cooperation with two schools in Kuala Lumpur: Eton House and Garden International School. Ms. Lia Syed, Yolanda Lopez and volunteers visited Eton House on 6th May to give a presentation of MSRI, the Sahabat Support Center and the programmes it offers and present the shoe box project. In June, Ms Lia will visit Garden International School to give a talk to the students about the meaning of being a refugee.
MSRI has tried to give a more personal touch to the shoe box project by creating a child to child communication channel and through the decoration of the box. Each shoe box will carry a card with the details of the refugee child (name, gender, nationality, age, etc.) in the form of a "Hi" message. The children of the schools in reply will put in the box a message for the refugee child. After the distribution of presents personalized thank you notes will be sent to the children of the schools participating to this charity appeal.
* The shoe boxes were kindly donated to MSRI by Bata.
